The Ultimate Tasmanian Roadtrip

  • Written by News Feature Team

While smaller in size than much of the mainland, Tasmania is big on natural beauty and attractions. Scenic views, quaint villages and stunning coastlines are just some of the diverse sights to be seen throughout Tassie. If you haven’t experienced a holiday to the Apple Isle, a roadtrip is a great way to explore on your own timeframe.

Getting Around Tasmania

Even though Tassie is a small state, allow a few days to get from coast to coast. For a roadtrip that is big on comfort and convenience, hire a car and camper. This gives you the freedom to stop and camp in the spots that take your fancy. Consider hiring from somewhere such as Cruisin’ Tasmania, where you can hire a campervan from either Hobart or Launceston. There are campervan hire options for families, couples and groups of friends who wish to experience all that Tasmania has to offer. If you are heading off on a roadtrip, a campervan is also an affordable accommodation option.

The Huon Trail

Get organised and head off on the Huon trail to discover some of the best natural sights Tasmania has to offer. Departing from Hobart, this driving tour can take a few days, depending on how often you stop. Taking the Southern Outlet, visitors can head towards Huonville, where the apple orchards, Huon River and Huon Pines will provide stunning scenery. Dining in the area is plentiful, with fresh Tasmania produce heavily featured on most menus. From Huonville, travel on to Franklin and through to Geeveston, where forestry and treetop walks will keep you occupied for hours.

Wilderness Wonderland

The beauty of driving through Tasmania is having extensive choices. Whether you are setting off from Launceston or Hobart, a drive along Wilderness Way is easily accessible. Setting off along the west coast, the heritage areas of Cradle Mountain, the lower Gordon River and Lake St Clair are not to be missed. Mountain ranges, waterfalls and post-settlement buildings that have been restored are just some of the beautiful sights to see along the drive.

Tasman Peninsular to Port Arthur

From Hobart, a trip to Port Arthur covers numerous bodies of water and takes in some beautiful scenery. The drive along the Tasman Peninsular takes in beautiful rock formations such as the Tessellated Pavement, as well as The Blowhole. With sea cliffs stretching more than 300m high, the scenery is breathtaking. Further along the drive will lead travellers to Port Arthur, a look at early convict life in Australia. Open until 5:30pm each day, the Historic Site hosts plenty of tours and attractions to keep you busy. From Port Arthur, head on to White Beach, a stunning coastal spot just 1.5 hours from Hobart. During the summer, you may have trouble finding space among the holiday makers, but it is well worth a stop to see the pristine sand.

Whatever aspect of Tasmania you want to explore, from beach to bushland, wineries to waterfalls, a roadtrip is one of the best ways to do it. Enjoy the freedom of planning your itinerary to suit the sights you wish to see. Take the time to soak up Tassie’s natural beauty; it is not easy to forget.
